Jersey Giants originate in America and were developed to replace the turkey as primary poultry meat source. They are among the heaviest and largest of all pure chicken breeds but their use to produce capons or broilers for slaughter is now being limited by the development of modern hybrid chicken breeds with much faster growth rates. They make excellent farmyard chickens as apart from producing an abundance of meat they are great layers, too, laying large, dark brown coloured eggs. The adult cock will way close to 6 kg life- weight and the hen up to 5 kg. The original colour is black and this is still the heaviest strain of Jersey Giants to date, but white and blue coloured Jersey Giants were later also developed. Jersey Giants are a breed of chicken with a very good temperament and they are friendly towards other animals and men and usually not aggressive.
